Great design, well made. However, with every great design come some inherent flaws. Early this spring we had a nearly horizontal downpour. The exposed edges of the plastic panels caught the water and wicked it throughout the hives. I was able to stop this from occurring again by drawing a bead of caulk across the panel just outside the hive body. This acts like a dam or gutter and keeps the water from traveling. A screened bottom board is not necessary here in my neighborhood, but it sure makes it easy to clean the bottom of capping debris, dropped pollen and check for mites, earwigs, beetles and more. The white color of the panels makes that task even easier.
Bought to fit an existing topbar beehive. Had to modify it a little but it fits and works great! Love it.
Excellent service and products!!! Bill
The screened bottom board is essential for hive hygiene, ventilation and insulation when very cold (it is currently 29F on May 22 in Ohio). I re-inserted foam boards to keep hive warmer as new bees with queen are in the hive. The SBB is essential to the bees well being.
