Oily Rag Fire Safety

If you choose to use rags to apply tung oil, be careful and be sure to dispose of them properly.

Oily rags can catch fire without a spark, flame, or external heat
Do NOT throw oily rags away or leave them around your property carelessly
2 safe options for dealing with oily rags are:

Spread the rags out flat on your driveway or a similar non-flammable, wide open surface outside for a few days until the oil has COMPLETELY dried out. No less than 48 hours drying time. While they are drying, you can contact your local waste disposal authorities about their policies for disposing of oily rags.
Put the rags in an empty paint can, weigh them down with a rock, and fill the can to the brim with water. The rags must be 100% submerged. Then seal the paint can. Oily rags can be safely stored in this fashion while you contact your local waste disposal authorities about their policies for disposing of oily rags.
