Great design, well made. However, with every great design come some inherent flaws. Early this spring we had a nearly horizontal downpour. The exposed edges of the plastic panels caught the water and wicked it throughout the hives. I was able to stop this from occurring again by drawing a bead of caulk across the panel just outside the hive body. This acts like a dam or gutter and keeps the water from traveling. A screened bottom board is not necessary here in my neighborhood, but it sure makes it easy to clean the bottom of capping debris, dropped pollen and check for mites, earwigs, beetles and more. The white color of the panels makes that task even easier.
