Our 2024 Western Red Cedar Top Bar Hive has multiple improvements:

  • Made from 1 inch thick Western Red Cedar for maximum pest resistance and insulation
  • Includes our exclusive premium aluminum composite roof which can be reversed from dark copper color to white depending on the season. Extremely durable and water proof-a great improvement over wooden roof material which always rots and eventually leaks over time
  • The redesigned double-window viewing wall results in much less warping of the window cover (which bees don't like because is allows light in) which often occurs in other designs with long window walls
  • The redesigned base is made with more solid components which improves strength and decreases vulnerability to water infiltration and rot
  • All hardware (screened bottom and all fasteners) is stainless steel
  • Comes with 28 milled Douglas Fir single-body top bars. Doug Fir is super strong and our design minimizes cross comb problems.
  • Comes with a pre-assembled base and window wall making your assembly much faster, easier, and hassle-free.

Top Bar Hives are great for home bee keeping since with these hives you are normally only moving single bars of single bars of honeycomb (at the most 7 lbs), versus the heavy boxes of the Langstroth and Warre hives (up to 60 lbs).

Top Bar Hives are also great as you can move the following board as the hive grows, and don't have to keep adding more boxes as you do with Langstroth and Warre hives

Our Western Red Cedar Top Bar Hives are made from responsibly harvested wood. Wester Red Cedar is incredibly pest resistant, very durable outdoors, and a great insulator. This lumber is great for outdoor applications, and looks great with an application of tung oil. Western Red Cedar is one of the most rot resistant and beautiful softwoods.

    INCLUDES:

    • Sustainable Western Red Cedar for all walls, bases, and legs
    • Moulded legs that can easily be leveled and support 300+ lbs
    • Exclusive composite aluminum reversible roofs
    • Exceptionally strong CNC-cut ends with ventilation
    • Oval side & end entrances cut to the same size as standard Warre entrances with Black Walnut covers included
    • 28 x 19" Douglas Fir top bars
    • 40" long hive body (all parts pre-drilled and base and windows pre-assembled)
    • 45" long hinged roof with composite aluminum roofing for longest life and maximal water-proofing
    • 2 viewing windows let you see the bees in action, but the window cover won't warp and split like single-window hive walls
    • Screened bottom board with stainless steel screen
    • Bottom board also has integrated slots to slide in provided bottom boards to convert the bottom into a solid bottom
    • Stainless steel screws, screens, and other fasteners
    • Assembly diagram and instructions

    Hive Going STRONG Since 2011

We purchased our top-bar hive from you back in 2011. We gave it two coats of paint and added a metal corrugated panel over the roof to insure the hive stays dry and no rain gets in. We captured and installed a local swam here in San Diego, and the bees have been going gangbusters ever since. The bees are very happy with the hive and so are we!

Is very nice, would buy another. Be nice to have a bottom board that would drop open with screen in it for ventilation.

    Top Bar

Perfect condition upon delivery. Well designed and an easy build. I decided to stain the entire hive and it took the stain well and now looks like a work of art. Thanks

    Very Good Hive

Very good overall. Assembly was very easy. Roof ridge board was warped, but a replacement board arrived within 4 days. Shipping was unbelievably fast. I did, however, reinforced the roof with a 1 x 2in straps in the middle. I also replaced the hinge pins with machine screws and nuts for sturdier operation. Overall, everything looks works great!

    Wanted: Horizontal Langstroth Hive

We purchased one of the original Bee Thinking TBHs. It has been going strong for 7 years and we have been very happy with it.

What we are looking for in our next hive is a horizontal Langstroth with cavity dimensions that will accommodate Flow frames for easy honey extraction. Please consider building a horizontal hive that will accommodate foundationless Langstroth frames and Flow frames... It would combine the best of what top-bar and Langstroth hives each have to offer!
